World No Tobacco Day 2024 aims to reduce tobacco use among youth

Posted on: 5/24/24

On Friday, May 31, the global campaign “World No Tobacco Day” will provide a platform for youth to step in and speak out against the tobacco industry. This year’s campaign, presented by the World Health Organization (WHO) is themed #TobaccoExposed. The focus is on equipping today’s youth with the knowledge required to easily detect the tobacco industry’s manipulation tactics and empower individuals to stand up against them and become a tobacco-free generation. Tobacco remains a leading cause of preventable deaths worldwide, claiming eight million lives annually according to the WHO. Disturbingly, recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that in 2023, 90.3% of high school students and 87.1% of middle school students admitted to using a form of nicotine product in the past 30 days. This highlights an urgent need for collective action to prevent and reduce tobacco use among youth.

World No Tobacco Day serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of educating and empowering young people to resist the influence of the tobacco industry. By working together, we can protect the health and future of the next generation.
