Vizient provides environmental sustainability resources

Posted on: 7/12/24

With an increase in heat waves, natural disasters, and exposure to pollution and harmful chemicals, the need for hospitals to advocate for their patient populations by tackling environmental sustainability has never been greater. Healthcare systems are responsible for 8% of the United States’ greenhouse gas emissions and produce an average of 25 pounds of waste per patient, per day. But how can hospitals navigate these emerging threats and create a resilient healthcare system capable of delivering the highest quality of care?

While terms like “chemicals of concern,” “scope 3 emissions” and “environmentally preferred (EP),”  can be confusing at best and misleading at worst. Vizient® strives to provide our member healthcare providers with practical environmental sustainability solutions that are smart, sustainable and resilient.

All Vizient providers can access foundational tools, reports and insights that create a roadmap for improving sustainability performance. These include:
• Environmental Sustainability Provider Roadmap and ES Optimized Insights - highlights current performance and future opportunities for sustainable purchasing.
• EPS Designated Portfolio - features products that meet defined EP criteria.
• Climate Performance Solutions - offers a comprehensive approach to integrating sustainable practices such as greenhouse gas (GHG) assessments.

These resources and offerings help healthcare systems of all sizes address their environmental impacts and advocate for improved human and environmental health.
