EMTALA Part 2

This is part 2 of a 3 part series. Go to July 16 on the education calendar to register for the entire series. (Part 1 is on July 16 and Part 3 is on Aug. 13.) Medicare-certified hospitals must follow CMS regulations and interpretative guidelines for the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). Part Two will discuss EMTALA issues such as adequacy of medical screening examinations, appropriate transfers, and certification of false labor. EMTALA sign issues and observation of inpatient and outpatient will be included.

Learning Objectives

Describe an adequate medical screening examination for behavioral health, obstetrics and other patients.
Describe an appropriate certification of false labor.
Illustrate an appropriate transfer and discuss what must be included on the transfer form.
Review what language must be on EMTALA signs.
