Leading healthcare systems must focus on performance improvement (reducing costs) and growth. Typically, the focus on cost-cutting is the common reaction to headwinds...89% of hospitals currently have a cost-reduction plan (but only 6% characterized their programs as effective). However, growth can have a greater near- and long-term impact on value. Growth can have a compounding effect on value creation and come in a variety of ways: grow revenue at the same margin (top line); substitute lower margin for higher margin services (bottom line); or expand volumes in higher margin services (top and bottom line).

Learning Objectives include:

  • Describe the limitations of cost-cutting as a sole strategy for healthcare performance improvement.
  • Identify different growth strategies that can create sustainable value for healthcare systems.
