Legal Brief

On Monday, April 9, U.S. Representative Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) and U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) announced the American Privacy Rights Act of 2024, which aims to establish a national consumer data privacy and security standard that gives people the right to control their personal information. While the legislation is not specific to the healthcare industry, a number of the policies proposed would impact how healthcare entities do business.

The proposed bipartisan legislation would limit the types of consumer data that companies can collect, retain, and use. Individuals would also be allowed to opt out of targeted advertising, and have the ability to view, correct, delete, and download their data from online services.

It is still unclear whether the legislation will receive the necessary support for approval, but given the bipartisan support, it is definitely worth monitoring this legislation as it makes its way through committees this month. (Maggie Martin)
